It looks like BMW is working on something interesting the Vision EfficientDynamics concept. The Vision EfficientDynamics concept drive-train combines a plug-in hybrid with 1.5-liter, 163-hp, direct-injection, three-cylinder turbo diesel with two electric motors (one per axle), lithium-ion batteries and a software controller that modulates both drive-trains for a combined 356 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. It can do 0-60 in 4.8 seconds, top speed is 155mph and it gets 63 miles per gallon giving it a range of around 400 miles with fuel or 31 miles on electricity alone.

  1. BMW will introduce the four-cylinder diesel to the U.S. lineup now that tougher fuel economy standards have been imposed. http://green.autoblog.com/2009/11/11/bmws-baloga-confirms-four-cylinder-diesels-for-u-s-market/
